Since I typically hike alone, the game aspect of this gets lost. Many of the hashpoints are on private property and there is not enough time to properly contact owners for permission. I used to think I would use the game to do a survey of our graticule. How much public land? How much agriculture? Of course, these questions can be answered in other ways but with actual visits to the hashes, qualitative observations can be made.
It has recently occurred to me that just because I love xkcd, I don't have to rely on that system for my random points. Using GeoMidpoint, I have acquired a list of 100 random locations in the 35N, 82W graticule.
This blog will feature descriptions of each location as I visit it. It may take a while but since I have all locations in advance, I can talk to property owners, show them the blog. Hopefully they will want to participate in my survey of 35minus82.
